At just the right moment a lake appeared to my left and I made a beeline for it. The area near the lake turned out to be a great campsite. The air was full of birds whose cries echoed among the peaks of the surrounding Ural Mountains. Before dinner, I decided to strip down to my underwear and take a swim to mark the watershed between Asia and Europe. Opening both eyes wide, the water I peered through was pale green and cloudy.
