I had heard rumours that a senior student friend of mine from university, Kishida, had got a job with an air conditioning company and had been sent to Belgium. I had checked out his contact details through my mum in Japan and it turned out that he was still in Belgium. Kishida’s mother was thrilled about it, and had insisted on my visiting him. I had a very tight schedule as it was, but I opened the map and found that Kishida was living in Ostende, smack on the road that led to my final port of call in Eurasia, Calais.
