Perhaps it was just my imagination, but the moment I crossed the border the land seemed to become as flat as a pancake. Even if it was something I had read about before in textbooks, it was immediately obvious. An irrefutable topological reality unrolled ahead of my tyres with no apparent end. Yet there was something that was more obvious and which held much more significance for me, than the land simply being flat. Namely the fact that the cycle track network was perfection itself.
