Another day, an old man running a
petrol station-cum-bike shop readily consented, with a
broad smile, to my using a phone there to call the Gerry
Ryan Show.
“We’ve had enthusiastic requests from listeners asking if
you could sing a Japanese song, Yas.”
I sang ‘Koinobori’, but in retrospect I realised I had sung
the same song at the CNCF banquet in Mongolia. Not that
I had any others I could sing on request . . . I sat drinking tea
and chatting with the man in the cycle shop and his family
for about thirty minutes after the programme finished. They
were all so incredibly kind that I felt I was talking to old
friends. (from "Against the Wind" - Poolbeg Press)
