Running north to south, Baikal is a crescent moon shape, inclining slightly to the east at the top. It is 635 kilometres long, 80 kilometres wide and 1,637 metres deep. It is the deepest lake on earth, containing 20% of the planet’s fresh water. The volume of the lake is more than 23,000 cubic kilometres. It is said that in order to empty the lake, water would have to flow out via the only river to drain the lake, the Angara River, for four hundred years. The river that flowed in front of Tora’s house (where I had suffered with diarrhoea), the Selenga, supplies half the water that flows into Baikal. (from "Against the Wind" - Poolbeg Press)
