They were growing large quantities of vegetables on their allotment, including tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, sweet corn, herbs and potatoes. There were chickens everywhere. Just about the only thing they needed to buy from a shop was bread. I was reminded of how well Russian self-sufficiency works.
